Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop eco-friendly Hanji paper by applying chitosan to impart pattern effect. Hanji papers were pre-mordanted and then screen printed with chitosan, dyed with cochineal colorant. Color, dye uptake, and light fastness of printed papers were measured in relation to the presence of chitosan printing. The results suggested that cochineal was effective to pattern formation. Since dye uptake was increased by pre-mordanting as well as chitosan printing treatment, there was sufficient color difference so that patterns were clearly distinguished to have tone on tone effect. Chitosan printing treatment tended to increase the light fastness of dyed Hanji wall paper. It was confirmed the possibility to develop Hanji wall paper products with various colors and patterns by applying chitosan printing and natural dyeing.
